Subject: Tips to Prevent Card Skimming at ATM Machines
Cc:
Bcc:
Faculty and Staff,
Card skimming occurs at ATM machines when small imaging devices capture your card number and are
then used to commit identity fraud. The following tips will help protect you from card skimming at ATM
machines:
Use ATMs that are in familiar locations.
Push and pull the card slot on the ATM machine. If it comes off, call 911. Skimmers are usually
held on by double-stick tape.
Cover the number pad with your hand or a sheet of paper when entering your PIN.
Gas pumps are also susceptible to skimming, but the skimmer is inside and cannot be seen. Therefore, use
a pump in direct view of the attendant or go in to pay. Also remember to check your credit card statement
regularly.
Please be cautious when using ATM machines and alert the police if you notice anything suspicious.
