Subject: Finding a Better Way to Sell Fresh Bananas

Fresh Del Monte has suggested that 7-Eleven stores sell fresh bananas wrapped in plastic.
Selling more bananas and other fresh foods is helping us build profits lost when cigarette sales
declined. Although the wrapper may slow ripening and extend the shelf life of bananas, the
wrapping may turn customers off. They may see it as an environmental issue, and many may not
appreciate wrapping in plastic something that comes naturally wrapped in the first place.
I suggest that we urge Fresh Del Monte to develop a wrapper that is biodegradable. Until we
have a biodegradable wrap, we franchisees should not support the move to plastic-wrapped
bananas. At the February 1 meeting of the 7-Eleven Franchise Owners Association of Texas, I
propose that we reject the plastic wraps in favor of a biodegradable wrap that could achieve the
same purpose.
Please let me know by January 20 whether you agree that a biodegradable wrap would be more
attractive to our customers. I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.
