“charity: water” Transcript
Hi, everyone. Can you see me and hear me okay? Great.
If you’re like me, a water bottle like this is never too far away. But there are millions of people
who don’t have such a luxury. Not the bottle—they don’t have the luxury of the water inside.
In fact, there’s a worldwide water crisis. The World Health Organization estimates that over two
billion people—30 percent of the world’s population—lack regular access to clean, safe drinking
water. One way to address this crisis is to support organizations that help communities access
clean water.
I’m here to encourage you to support one of those organizations—charity: water, a highly
regarded charity that helps people in some of the poorest places around the world access clean
water.
Now, I know we’re all college students, and we don’t have lots of extra money. But one of the
best things about charity: water is that every penny you contribute goes directly to helping
people in need. Let’s start with some basic facts about water.
The sad truth is that far too many people don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. Here’s
the most recent data from the World Health Organization.
More than 2 billion people drink water from a source contaminated with feces. Of that number,
around 900 million don’t have access to a managed source of drinking water. And of that
number, some 160 million have to collect their own water from untreated lakes, rivers, and
ponds.
