Commentary
This edition of The Art of Public Speaking offers a needs improvement version and a final version of “Tap,
Tap, Tap,” a speech of self-introduction that draws on a student’s experience as a tap dancer. Video of
both versions is available online and on the DVD of student speeches. After showing and discussing the
needs improvement version, which is printed on pages 307308 of this manual, show the final version of
the speech and discuss why it is superior. Below is a synopsis of the final version.
Specific Purpose: To introduce myself to the audience by explaining how my experience as a tap
dancer reveals significant aspects of my life.
