PAY FOR PERFORMANCE
(BNA, 30 min.)
Two problems―the behavioral effects of pay and goal setting―are examined by Emanuel Kay. An
organization having equitable pay policies and open communication can better use pay as a motivator in
support of organizational goals. In a dramatic domestic scene, a wife tries to learn about the pay policies of
her husband’s company; he admits he doesn’t know, and her nagging him to ask for a raise leaves him more
baffled than ever.
Goal setting should be included in performance appraisal programs. Instead of acting as a judge with the
subordinate as defendant, the supervisor works with each employee to mutually agree upon work targets
and time limits. Kay cites examples of goal setting, including a dramatized episode showing a salesman
and his sales manager feeling their way through their goal setting sessions.

(Teacher’s Video Company, 50 min.)
From Bentonville, Arkansas, to every town in America, Wal-Mart grew into one of America’s largest
corporations. How did this company thrive despite competition from established discount retailers? How
did the humble founder duplicate his successful concept across the nation? This film profiles an amazing
entrepreneur who drove a beat-up pickup truck and ate breakfast at the local diner…even after he was
worth billions.

STAFFING FOR STRENGTH
(BNA, 25 min.)
This film shows three managers dealing with their subordinates. Management consultant Peter Drucker
advises: don’t promote a person into a job for which he or she is not qualified; don’t hesitate to pay a
capable researcher more than his or her boss if you wish to reward and keep the researcher; and constantly
evaluate the data you give to others to make them more effective.

THE REAL BEN FRANKLIN
(Discovery Channel School, 25 min.)
This video biography of Ben Franklin reveals a man who made his living as a printer, but who made history
as a writer, civic leader, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, and philosopher. His experiments with
electricity led to the lightening rod; his spare-time tinkering created the Franklin stove; and his intelligence
and patriotism made him one of the crucial architects of the new American nation.

WHAT CAN I CONTRIBUTE?
(BNA, 25 min.)
Management consultant Peter Drucker stresses that promotions in the managerial ranks should go to those
who have made their jobs different and bigger, not to those who have merely done their jobs well. Also
dramatized is the importance of satisfying information needs of colleagues to make team management a
reality. As Drucker puts it, Ask yourself, who in this company has to know what I am doing, and in what
form do I have to present it so that he or she can understand and use it?

WORKING WITH TROUBLED EMPLOYEES
(BNA, 30 min.)
Harry Levinson discusses two types of troubled employees―the depressed employee and the overly
aggressive employee―and gives tips on how to distinguish emotional problems from behavior associated
with disciplinary action or low morale. He outlines the supervisor’s role in dealing with troubled
employees―warning them not to play therapist, but also not to procrastinate because of guilt feelings or
out of sympathy.

HOST TERRY JONES: PILGRIMS IN ARMS
(Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 50 min.)
The Crusades began with an appeal from Emperor Constantine to repel the Turks from Constantinople and
fed on the pious determination of multitudes to take Jerusalem from the infidels. Soon hordes of armed
pilgrims were marching across Europe for the Holy Land. This film chronicles the improbable origins of
the Crusades, from Pope Urban II’s hunger for military power to the success of one of history’s greatest
mass communication and recruitment campaigns.
