APOLLO 13
(A & E Home Video, feature length)
This film is based on a real-life crisis on board an Apollo spacecraft that occurred on April 13, 1970. The
Apollo missions had become so routine that Apollo 13 generated little interest from the press―until a
routine maintenance procedure caused an oxygen tank to explode, leaving the three astronauts trapped in a
crippled capsule that might never make it back to earth. The film describes the struggle of the astronauts
and Mission Control technicians to improvise a new set of procedures to safely return the astronauts back to
earth as one crisis after another arises. This film makes us aware of how often disruptions and
discontinuities occur. Topics include: Group Problem Solving, Managing Ambiguity, Crisis Management,

ELIZABETH I―THE VIRGIN QUEEN
(A & E Home Video, 50 min.)
In 1559, Elizabeth I came to the throne at age twenty-five. England’s best loved queen reigned for forty-
four years. She was the daughter of Ann Boleyn and King Henry VIII, who bastardized her. Despite this,
and all of her father’s short-comings (his temper, scandals of church and wives), she adored him
unconditionally. Her childhood experiences shaped her into the queen she was to be. She learned how to
skate around the court tapestry of intrigues, conspiracy and jealousy. Although she gave her name to the
age of discovery, the Elizabethan Age, she herself resisted change. The wedge between the Catholic and
Protestant churches grew deeper during her reign.

THE MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN ASSETS
(BNA, 30 min.)
Rensis Likert explains how to rate an organization’s prevailing management system. The scale runs from
System I, an arbitrary, highly authoritarian management system (rare today in its pure form) through
System IV, a highly participative system. System IV firms are most likely to have a record of sustained
productivity, good employee relations, and high profitability. A dramatized sequence demonstrates that an
organization, in an effort to cut costs, may lean toward System I, but in doing so sacrifices employee
loyalty and operating efficiency.
