Further Elements of the Harmonic Vocabulary
This chapter is concerned with four topics, none of which are at all exotic or exceptional in music of the tonal era:
(1) the dominant with a substituted sixth, (2) the augmented dominant, (3) ninth chords, and (4) the common–tone
diminished seventh chord. All of these should be drilled and practiced just as faithfully as the chords introduced in
previous chapters were. Added–note chords, discussed briefly in connection with topic (1), and eleventh and
thirteenth chords, mentioned briefly in connection with topic (3), are not important elements of the harmonic
vocabulary before impressionism.

modulation, this excerpt being an interesting exception.

reverses direction and makes a quick descent to the V in m.78 by means of parallel first inversion diatonic
triads. The melody is independent of the bass in mm. 73–74 and moves parallel with it in mm. 75–78.
