Relationship between Articulator Position and Resonance
I find it useful to discuss the relationship between articulatory position and resonance. Although
students have knowledge of resonance and the relationships, experience playing with resonance
seems to be useful.
1. First, help students grasp the source-filter theory. Source is, of course, the vocal folds (for
vowels), but what about the alternate sources for other phonemes? Try whispering vowels, or

supports cleft lip and palate repair in economically depressed regions. The videos are
professional-quality animations that do a good job of showing clefts and repairs.

Swallowing
In terms of practical, applied information, swallowing provides a great opportunity to discuss
anatomy in a format that students can appreciate. As mentioned earlier, digitized MBSs are a
great way to approach this discussion, and you can find some online. You can also utilize the
animation on swallowing included on this CD-ROM. I have found that students greatly
appreciate the opportunity to examine these and to peek into the world of the professional SLP.
