STEP 1: Give each member of the class one of the instructions below, so all the assignments are distributed.
(You might want to do this the class before you do this activity. Or have students do all of the assignments as a graded
assignment, due the day you do the exercise.
INSTRUCTIONS
(NOTE: Don’t include the italicized parts; they’re included for the instructor’s benefit as examples.)

ACTIVITY #10.2: BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE. (To illustrate how language and other symbols can be

STEP 1: Have students form groups of three.
STEP 2: Show the following instructions on a screen, or give them to all the students as a handout:
I will give everyone an example of an argument from a web site. I want each group to
STEP 3: Give each student a copy of the argument and let the groups discuss it and answer the question.
STEP 4: Reconvene as an entire class, and talk about the different groups’ answers to the question.
Particularly, discuss the argument in terms of the following principles:
