Chapter 19
REHEARSING, SETTING UP
THE ROOM, AND OVERCOMING NERVOUSNESS
Chapter overview
This chapter takes students from the end of the design stage to the day of the presentation.
Brief outline of the chapter
I. Rehearsing, rehearsing. This section suggests two ways for students to rehearse: by
themselves (to get familiar with giving the presentation) and in front of others (to be sure
the presentation makes sense and accomplishes its purpose).
II. Setting up the room. This section talks about positioning the screen, setting up the
projector, positioning tables and chairs, adjusting the lights, adjusting the temperature,
checking the microphone, and eliminating distractions.
III. Overcoming last-minute nervousness. This section gives a few helpful tips.
IV. Exercise.
General comments
Students can gain confidence as speakers when they learn they have some control over the set up
of a room. The techniques in this chapter are positive ways to channel energy during the hour or
so before a presentation.
Students are particularly interested in techniques for setting up the room. The suggestions are
practical tips that give nervous speakers something to occupy their minds in the time just before
a presentation.
