Process Technology Equipment
(Note to Instructor: Time permitting, do the activities listed below or possibly assign
them as homework. Be sure to remind students what to read for the next class.)
1. Based on your personal experience, name some hazards you encountered working
with tools, along with any injuries you or others suffered, at work or at home. How
could these hazards have been addressed and the injuries prevented? Discuss this
with your fellow students.
2. Research tool safety. Write a two-page paper for submission and prepare a
presentation, focusing on a specific tool, its usage and maintenance, safe operation,
and potential hazards.
3. Given a set of assorted tools, identify each tool type and describe or demonstrate
proper and improper use with a classmate. Be prepared to present this information to
the class.
4. Consider the use of wrenches in the process industries. Work in a team and discuss
the various types of wrenches, how they are used, and the safety-related effects of
proper and improper usage.
5. Using sewing thread and weights, experiment with the physics of proper and
improper cable loading.
6. Demonstrate the proper use of tools for tightening a bolt or flange.
7. Research and present OSHA regulations for forklift, crane, and/or power tool use.
