MARKETING STARTER: CHAPTER 5
HARLEY-DAVIDSON: Selling Freedom, Independence, Power, and Authenticity
Synopsis
Even if you’ve never ridden a motorcycle, you’re likely familiar with Harley-Davidson. The company recently
celebrated its 110th anniversary and enjoys selling more than 50 percent of all U.S. heavyweight motorcycles. In the
past four years, sales have grown more than 30 percent and profits are up almost sevenfold. Harley riders are
fanatically loyal to the brand. They meet at events, such as the anniversary parade where over 100,000 people
attended the parade and nearly 7,000 riders rode in the parade. They get Harley-Davidson tattoos. Why? While the
image of a Harley rider is that of the outlaw bad-boy, the reality is that the bikers are older, more affluent, and better
educated. And more are women than ever before. The Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) has over a million members.
While Harley owners themselves may not be able to explain why the connection to the bike is so deep, the company
has worked hard to study and understand what makes their customers tick.

affect how customers feel about, buy, and consume products. The goal is to explore the reasons why customers buy
Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and what the product adds to their lives. Beyond making an iconic motorcycle,
Harley-Davidson has fostered an almost fanatically loyal fan base. It is likely that some of your students will know

with the class. You will want to capitalize on these students’ testimonials as you explore the Harley-Davidson brand
together.
Starting the Discussion

customer insights that have fueled Harley-Davidson’s continued growth? What does Harley-Davidson understand
about its customers better than the competition? Tour the Harley-Davidson website at
http://www.harley-davidson.com/. Peruse the tabs across the top; note how many are truly customer-focused. The
goal is to show that Harley-Davidson’s allure results from much more than the functional attributes of its product—

tabs to see how the company works to draw its riders together.
