Solution Manual Chapter 28: Design Step 8.
Design Report
Note: There are no unique answers to these exercises. You can also use them for class room
discussion.
1. While writing a design report a team members copies material from the Internet and
pastes it into their section of the report. He/she feels that this is important information
relevant to the operation of your design. How do you deal with this situation?
2. In reviewing your team’s design report you come across this statement in the section on
“Conceptual design”: “We brainstormed three alternate solutions and then we used the
design matrix to decide in which one we should use for our project.” How would you
restate this sentence to make it sound more professional?
3. One of your team members didn’t contribute very much to the design but spent a lot of
time constructing the competition entry. When writing design report section on
“Manufacturing details” she/he wrote the following sentence: “I made the base out of
cardboard and then I glued the motor and gear wheel thing on it and I hoped it would
work out ok.” How would you restate this sentence to make it sound more professional?
4. Sometimes you can be too concise in writing your design report. Consider the concise
statement “we made it out of wood”. How would you change this to still be concise and
yet give the reader more relevant information?
5. A team member wants to put several cartoons in the design report to entertain the
instructor who will be reading it. The cartoons have nothing to do with the design process
but they do inject some humor into the performance evaluation. List several reasons why
you think this is or is not acceptable.
