Chapter 26 Exercises (Design Step 6)
Note: There are no unique solutions to these exercises. You can also use them
for in-class discussion.
Manufacturing and Testing Strategies
1) In Chapter 20 we discussed Gantt charts as a way if planning your design activities. It can
also be used to develop manufacturing and testing strategies. Suppose you are in a design
team with three other students (Sara, Jim and Leslie) and are beginning to construct (i.e.,
manufacture) your design. Develop a Gantt chart that will show the responsibilities and
deadlines for each student (including yourself) for the following activities: 1) talk to a
machinist for advise on making unique components of your design, 2) search for
components on the Internet or in hardware stores (wheels, bolts, etc.), 3) collect receipts
for purchases, 4) keep drawings up to date, 5) assemble the components to make a
working model of the design.
2) Now that you have built you design it’s time to test it. You only have two weeks left in
the semester and during your first test you determine that you prototype does not function
properly. How do you salvage your design before the semester ends?
Materials and Joining Methods
3) When you begin testing the prototype of your design you find that an important
component you made from balsa wood breaks under load. You need to fabricate a new
version of the component and replace it quickly. What material do you choose for its
replacement?
4) Your teams final design calls for gluing two pieces of metal together. During testing, the
glue doesn’t hold and the prototype fails to function properly. How do you fix this
problem quickly and securely?
5) One of your team members wants to assemble the main components of the design with
bolts. It turns out that the bolts add a lot of weight to the prototype and are difficult to
keep from coming loose during testing. What would you recommend using instead of
bolts at this late date and why?
