Mr. James F. Luke
Golf Course Superintendent
Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta, GA 30906
Dear Mr. Luke:
Everyone in the golfing world is familiar with Augusta National whose beauty extends beyond its
challenging holes. I will graduate with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture from The Ohio State
University in August, and I would like to contribute to Augusta as an assistant superintendent.
I feel strongly that flowers and flowering shrubs should be an integral part of every course. To prepare
myself for this, I took courses in annual and perennial flowers and aboriculture. I had practical
experience at planting flowers, choosing the flower for the situation, and pruning flowering shrubs so the
succeeding bloom is not damaged.
Each year you go before the greens committee to submit the yearly budget and any changes or purchases
you feel necessary to maintain the course properly. To help prepare myself for that situation, I studied
accounting, business and administrative writing, and speech. Accounting showed me how to present a
budget to a non-specialist. Writing and speech classes showed me how to effectively communicate my
ideas to other people. Although there is no substitute for live experience, I am confident that I could be
successful in dealing with a greens committee.
As my résumé shows, I have had varied work experience. I have done all mowing operations from tees to
greens. At Augusta National the greens are the course's major attraction. Most of my work experience
has centered around the greens, mowing, aerifying, watering, syringing, spraying, and fertilizing them.
I would like to have an interview to go into greater detail about my abilities. From May 20 to June 8, I
am on break from school and would be able to visit you. Your position is one of the most enviable but yet
toughest in the world, and I can help you remain on top. I will be waiting to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Merry
