“Regarding the Pain of Others" Response
The author Sontag starts this story right off by talking about a photo taken during the war.
It sets the tone for what the rest of the article will be about. There is already some imagery
from Sontag descripting the picture and it already engages the reader emotionally. She
makes a good point that a photograph of a body brings the viewer even closer to it. This
can be controversial at times because the deceased should be respected not being
photographed to get recognition. Sontag also mentions that there was a press photograph
ban during the First World War. This is interesting because photography during wars often
create propaganda for each country and is a big part of the war. However, it is
controversial because on one hand the photograph shows the truths of war and what the
soldiers are going through but it can also be grotesque to see. Television and especially
news channels have become a main source of information for things happening around the
world. Unlike photography they have to be more censored about what they are on live
television for example they can’t display bodies on the news whereas photographers will
publish those pictures. With photography and news broadcasting everything around the
world it makes me think of what is happening with ISIS now and the videos they release.
