1. Describe the circumstances that led to the change from sophos
to Sophist. What is a Sophist? Identify and explain three or four
specific sophistic ideas.
2. Make a convincing case that advertisers are sophists. What
would nonsophistic advertising be like? Do you agree that
advertisers are Sophists? Explain.
3. Make a convincing case that most politicians are sophists. How
does a nonsophistic politician differ from one who is a sophist? Is it
possible to be a successful politician without ever resorting to
sophistry? Explain. *
4. Is there any merit to the claim that modern colleges and
universities are sophistic in their attempts to compete for students?
What trends in contemporary education might be viewed as
sophistic? Are they? Analyze. *

something logically funny about the claim that all values are
relative? Analyze carefully.
6. Discuss Protagoras s notion that disagreements can be cured.
7. What s wrong with believing whatever makes you happy? Are
there any truly harmful consequences to believing in astrology or in
the medicinal efficacy of prayer? That is, on what grounds can one
person object to another person s standard of happiness? On what
grounds can we question the beliefs of others if we haven t had
similar experiences? If we are justified in questioning and rejecting
the beliefs of others because they do not conform to our standards,
on what grounds can we refute their rejection of our beliefs? That
is, on what grounds can we evade the sophists arguments that all
beliefs are relative? If the sophists are right, then what? *
8. Is there a contradiction involved in the way the Sophists present
their doctrine that might makes right ? Can you present a better
version of it? *
9. Is there any way to refute the idea that might makes right?
Explain why or why not. *
