• Sustainability refers to the capacity of healthy ecosystems to continue functioning
indefinitely or economic development that meets the needs of the present generation
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

• Air pollution occurs when the release of materials to the atmosphere cannot be safely
disposed of by natural processes.
• Six common air pollutants:
o Particulate matter refers to small particles that occur because of dusty industries
and smoke.
• The major concerns with the six common air pollutants:
o High levels of ground ozone have been linked to various respiratory ailments.
• Acid rain occurs when both sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide combine with air vapor in
the atmosphere and return to earth in the form of acid rain.
• Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather
patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years.

• Land pollution refers to the contamination that occurs when toxic waste and other waste
material that don’t belong on land are disposed of on land.

• Water pollution refers to the contamination of water sources such as lakes, streams, wells,
and oceans by substances that are harmful to living organisms.
