Problem and justification
The case “Zipcar: Refining the Business Model” presents a problem that the audience can
see since the beginning, this new company needs founds to grow in a promising market.
The required capital is 1.3 million and Chase, the companys CEO, is likely to get it
through an exposition in a forum for women entrepreneurs. The problem does not stop at
this point, ahead in time the key question would be How to manage the companys
resources for the best use of the 1.3 million needed for Zipcars five year business
plan?
In the final part of the case it is said that the venture capital needed will be used to prove
the Boston markets viability. Besides that this additional money was necessary to finish
development of technology, prove the business model and better understand demand.
Chase believed that in five years Zipcar would have 10,000 members in Boston and would
have the possibility to expand in at least other 14 cities in the US. To reach this expected
objectives it was definitely necessary get venture capital but more important to manage
this resources in an effectively way.
Zipcar is a start-up company and the two women behind this company have been
developing a list of procedures to finally launch the company, but in a near future the way
of doing things would have to change if they want the enterprise can sustain it-self and
produce significant revenues.
