Youth Contact Sports Concussion
Concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury which is most frequent in those playing sports.
Repeated concussions are a known cause of various neurological disorders, most notable chronic
traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), for instance in professional athletes it has led to premature
retirement, erratic behavior and even suicide. While each individual sport has always and
continues to look ways to not just improve the sport but to minimize the risk of injuries such as
concussions, youth sports should continue to be allowed including those sports that are
considered extreme contact such as football.
Playing sports helps develop teamwork and leadership skills, working as a team to reach a
common goal definitely helps children develop communication and problem-solving skills that
will benefit them not only on the field but off the field as well (usmc-mccs.org). Leadership
skills that translate to be not only effective leaders in their respective classrooms but in the
streets as well avoiding unnecessary mischief. Building teamwork not only in classroom with
classmates, but at home as well-being positive role models including their siblings. Others have
and will continue to argue that learning especially teamwork and leadership skill doesn’t occur
during games, where players are often afraid to take risks because a mistake may cost the team
the game (Lench). In addition, there may be no supporting evidence to evidence that such sport
develops teamwork and leadership skill that transfer off the field as well.
