The graph shows the age of English women when they gave birth to their first child in 1966, 1986, and
2006. Overall, the percentage of women who gave birth for the first time at age 30 or younger has decreased,
while at age 30 and above has increased.
In 1966, the percentage of women who gave birth to their first child between the ages of 20-24 was more than
60%, almost twice as high as 35% for women aged 19 and under and for women aged 25- 29 is 38%. By
1986 and 2006, at the age of 19 and younger, the rate dropped to 21% in 1986 and just over 10% in 2006.
And among the 20-24 year olds, it fell to 39% and then to 30%, respectively. Meanwhile, the rate of first
births between the ages of 25 and 29 increased to more than 50% in 1986 and fell to more than 40% in 2006.
On the other hand, the percentage of women aged 30 to 34 and 34 to 39 who gave birth to their first child
increased dramatically, from 13% to 45 percent and 8% to 30%, respectively. At the age of 40 and older, the
rate also increased slightly, but only at less than 5%.
