ABSTRACT
Glossophobia or the fear of public speaking is one of the forms of social behavior.
Anxiety may cause students’ s underachievement at work or at school and even speaking
avoidance in classroom settings. The main objective of this research is to investigate the
factors contributing public speaking anxiety (PSA) among Business English second-year
students of National Economics University is being investigated in the current study. A
questionnaire was adopted from Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA)
made by McCroskey (1970; 1992) as the research instrument in order to measure the
level of students‘ s anxiety when they give a speech or presentation. The 65 participant
Business English second year students were randomly selected using the convenience
sampling method. The result showed that the factors contributing to public speaking
anxiety, both were significantly varied. The majority of students get anxious as they were
afraid of standing in front of large groups. Additionally, the findings revealed that poor or
insufficient preparation and dissatisfaction of students with their own abilities are also the
leading cause of increasing speech anxiety. These factors have negatively affected
Business English second year student’s public speaking skills which were clearly seen in
the findings of the questionnaire.

CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
Public speaking fear, also known as glossophobia or speech anxiety, is the most
common and large-affected anxieties, with the effect on 75% percent of the world
population. This phobia is a general issue that university students have difficulty in,
especially second-year Business English students at National Economics University, who
have to use the second language to deliver their speech most of their time during almost
inclass periods. Numerous students get trouble with raising their voice during classes
because of this common fear, results in their long-lacking confidence as well as their
study motivation. Besides, public speaking is an essential part of human life. The good
public speaking skill has a great influence on college student’s career development as
well as their study results at school, help building relationships, resolve conflict, or even
gain the upper hand in negotiations. Therefore, the reason behind public speaking fear
should be analyzed to help Business English students have a further comprehension of
this phobia and decrease the consequences it brings back. This paper will focus on the
causing factors of this public speaking anxiety.
1. Rationale of the research
In professional’s worldwide, good public speaking skills are essential since it is the
depiction of their profession. According to Rudolph F. Verderber, Deanna D. Sellnow,.
Kathleen S. Verderber said in the book The challenge of effective speaking: “public
speaking, a sustained formal presentation by a speaker to an audience, is simply one form
of human communication. So learning to be an effective public speaker will help you to
be more effective in other communication settings as well”.
To university students, good public speaking is an important skill to get the
achievement when they’re still studying at school as well as their future career. It helps
students to get good marks, makes them feel confident and become more active. Effective
public speaking skills is very useful for career advancement, as they indicate valuable
qualities for the job market creativity such as critical thinking skills, leadership abilities
and professionalism. Speaking at events and conferences is a good way of building
credibility. The more well-known the event the better, as students can add these speaking
achievements to their resume.
Public speaking fear is a general issue that university students get into trouble with,
especially second-year Business English students – who have to raise their voice among
numerous people during almost periods. They feel scared when making a presentation in
front of their classmates, even when the teacher calls their name to stand up and answer
the question given They often forget what they want to say, act strangely on the stage or
sometimes can not say anything. This leads to the tendency of avoiding speaking in
public.
2. Purpose of the research
The research aims at providing different ways of overcoming the fear of public
speaking related to the Business English majors at NEU. Public speaking ability is one of
the most essential skills for students not only during the time of their study but also in
their long-term career. However, many students and schools do not pay much attention to
this skill. Hence, there is a significant part of students who have not realized the
importance of speaking skills. This has caused a lot of difficulties for their results and
