Write a brief (3-5 sentence), informal, answer to the following question: What aspect of reality,
that is, the present world, is Octavia Butler trying to describe in “The evening, the morning, and
the night”?
Reading Butler’s work made me realize the intense discrimination that exists for people who
differ from the norm. Not only are those people treated differently because of their condition,
but what is more alarming is that others can’t see those “different” people for who they
actually are. Instead, we attribute a title to them that by definition makes them different, and
we ignore any evidence proving that they are like us. There is some sort of a confirmation bias
when we identify someone with those who are different us, which prevents them from ever
integrating in society as they will forever be seen as “different”.
