World Wide Web vs the Internet
•World Wide Web is an application that
runs on top of the Internet
–Internet = plumbing
–Accessed via a web browser
•Google, Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, etc

•Documents that contain content on the

•Building blocks of the WWW
•Contain Hyperlinks –links that create a
web of interconnected information
–Before hyperlinks, you had to search
the files for a new document

•The text that contains the hyperlinks,
usually found in a web page
•Each hypertext page (aka web page)
needs a unique address. This address is
called the
–Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
