Exam 1- Short Answer Essays
(1) Select a case study of a tourism site and describe how it reflects the ideas of
SOCIAL SUSTIANABILITY presented in class.
Social sustainability can be defined as a site that has been well maintained.
With this being said, a cite in which has had its systems, structures, and processes
maintained well enough to keep continuing its natural beauty, would be
considered socially sustainable. An example of a socially sustainable world
heritage site would be San Gimignano. San Gimignano is a Tuscan town located
in Italy, which is best known for its towers. San Gimignano can be remembered as
a well-civilized town in the urban lifestyle. To this day San Gimignano is as
beautiful as it was in 1200s. In 1262, the towers of San Gimignano were built to
surround the area. Tourists go there today and can expect to appreciate the site
with as much respect as the people of the middle ages. A world heritage site such
as the one above is an exact definition of what would be socially sustainable.
(2) Select a second case study of a tourism site and describe how it reflects the ideas
of ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTIANABILITY presented in class.
