European traveling and conquering/Slavery background:
Alvise Cadamosto—has to pay a tax to everybody involved in the transaction
European trade: largely run by kings or merchants, kings of Europe technically
signed off on slavery, merchants were the ones who drove it
Lancados: local middlemen dealers for slavery, largely people from Europe who had
drifted down to Africa, non Christians or former Christians, largely Mulattos (one
European one African parent)
–As long as lancados pay the taxes then the king doesn’t have to do much
-Allada was major trade hub
-had to pay off the Xarife, local chamber of commerce guy
-slavery in Africa was nowhere near like what it was like later in America
-King of Kayor—arab slave traders
Why/how was slavery beneficial to both Europeans and Africans?
