The popularity of gossip activities at work has long been a concern. In Grosser, Lopez-Kidwell,
Labianca & Ellwart’s (2012) study, participation rate of workplace gossip is above 90%. Although
several functions can be generated by gossip, it is often accompanied by negative consequences that
cannot be neglected by companies. Therefore, I believe that policy restricting employees from engaging
in work-related gossip should be implemented considering the workplace cohesion, economic outcomes,
and importance of educating employees to self-control their behaviours.
Anti-gossip policy should be performed because the overall working atmosphere would be tainted by
gossip, making it an unpleasant place to go to work. According to Aquino & Thau’s (2009)
investigation, victims of gossip cannot control their psychological emotions and easily feel suspicious
when they are being discussed among the group which they are absent from because they are judged by
