“WORKERS OF ALL COUNTRIES UNITE!”
Karl Marx (1818-1883) – philosopher, social scientist, historian, and revolutionary –
alongside colleague Friedich Engels (1820-1895) – social scientist, author, political theorist –
wrote the well known The Communist Manifesto. A piece on the history of class struggles, the
nature of the Bourgeoisie (middle) and Proletariat (working) classes, and the different forms of
socialism and how they connect. It has been said this text is “the bible of socialism” (A History
of World Societies, p. 681). The whole writing is infamous but there is one line that evokes
passion; the last line of the text, “Workers of All Countries Unite!”
Marx and Engels make this simple cry after paragraphs of condemning the bourgeoisie
class. They show how this class is manipulative and brain-washing. They state how the
bourgeoisie has “put an end to all feudal, patriarchal, idyllic relations and has substituted naked,
