World Ethnographies
Directions: Answer each of the following questions in paragraph-form. Both answers should
total no more than 500 words.
1) Discuss the positionality of anthropologists Mahmood and Khosravi. Explain how their
respective points of entry into the research in+uenced their ,ndings.
The position of the anthropologists are their research and to demonstrate and illustrates
the struggles of woman in these countries by their ,eldwork. Khosravi, her position was trying to
,nd the right places where he could ,nd young resistance, she also felt the necessity to ,ll this
empty knowledge of what young people in Westerners and Islamic republic su2er every day. She
is also a2ected with the problems that young people in Tehran have to deal in order to resist the
unfairness that is imposed to them from religious issues. She described her project as an
“ethnography of su2ering and anguish." Saba Mahmood explores the cultural and religious
aspects of Egyptian society through an ethnographic report of a middle class women’s mosque
movement that is part of one of the biggest Islamic Revival in Cairo, Egypt. She also explain how
they are really pressures by the religious doctrine and how this in+uenced in economic and
politic. The objective in her ,eldwork was to demonstrate how these woman are a2ected by this
doctrines, and how they ,ght in order to achieve and arranged them as autonomous agents in a
community that has been exposed as a synonym of oppression and unjust treatment by liberal
feminist.
2) Describe and discuss the ways in which women seek power in Veiled Sentiments, Politics of
Piety, and "The Light in Her Eyes." Be sure to include an answer to the following question in your
