Over the course of the last three decades, women in the U.S. have made unprecedented
progress in climbing into management positions. According to recent research conducted by

Catalyst, a nonprofit organization focused on expanding opportunities for women at work, The
number of corporate officer positions held by women in the U.S. rose from 8.7% in 1995 to
16.4% in 2005 (Catalyst, 2014).While the dramatic rise in women managers in mid 90s is
impressive, the number of women entering management and executive positions has remained
almost stagnant since 2005. In fact, in Fortune 500 companies, the percentage of women
corporate officer roles in the U.S. is stuck at 16%. This horrifying statistic brings to light issues
about American women in management and supports the position that more women should be
empowered.
Lying behind these barely improved figures is the complex interplay of both external and
internal barriers. Three of the many barriers include gender stereotypes in American society, the
