In our assigned reading from the article Women in the Criminal Justice System (Ajinkya,
2012) the article points out that among other items listed that “women incarcerated has grown by
more than 800 percent over the last three decades,” and that further “women of color are locked
up far more often.” I find the first number very alarming, while the second follows an historic
trend unfortunately, that a disproportionate percentage of people of color are and have been
incarcerated. The article and author go on to discuss the reasons why she feels that this statistic
has come about, stating that 1.) 85-90% of the women currently incarcerated have a history of
domestic and sexual abuse, 2.) 80% of the women suffer from substance addiction, 3.) 59% are
categorized as runaways, and that 4.) “they face additional barriers effectively re-entering
