Your first discussion topic concerns Christopher Columbus and whether the explorer was a hero or villain.
This, of course, is subject to interpretation, but given what you are reading in this course and what you
know about Columbus, do you believe he assisted the cause of humanity or damaged it? What
contributions did Columbus make? What case can be made that he was a bad actor?
In addition to your chapter reading on Columbus, you should peruse Columbus’s journal (available by
googling “Columbus journal”) and read at least one other source. You are obligated not only to post your
own opinion, but to respond to a few of the posts of your classmates. Also, please see the Discussion
Rubric for further details on what constitutes an ideal grade.
Your posts are due no later than before midnight January 2nd.

Christopher Columbus was one of the first of many European to land in the new world. By some people,
he is praised as a hero of courage and vision. Other people utterly despise Columbus as a villain of the
first order who enslaved the natives. Somewhere in the mix of those divergent opinions exists the truth
about the legacy of Christopher Columbus. Even though he was claimed to have discovered the
Americas, he was never the first to arrive here.
There are misconceptions and misplace, ideologies, facts, and theories about the history of Christopher
Columbus. Base on a historical perspective Christopher contributed to the expansion of Europe through
his discovery of the western hemisphere. According to the chapter, Columbus’s real motive for his
exploration of the new world was to bring a new era of Christianity, open a new dimension in religion.
Base on the chapter I think it was more to find power, conquest, and emersed wealth for himself.
The voyages of Christopher Columbus eventually destroyed and absolutely ruined Native American
culture forever. Base on how he communicates with the locals, it indicates his motive was wrong, he
refers to them as ignorant, subjugate, and servants, such attribute is not Christian like or heroic.
Columbus also brought over diseases that lead to the death of many natives because they were exposed
to measles, influenza, smallpox. The taking of land, wealth, and labor from indigenous peoples, leading
to their near extermination, and the transatlantic slave trade, which created a racial underclass.
Columbus was seeking adventure, glory, and wealth. At the same time, he believed he was doing God’s
work. Columbus also captured and enslaved other Indigenous peoples. The practice of enslavement was
common and legal in Europe at the time, and the trade of enslaved people was very lucrative. He
manipulated anyone who posed a threat to his perspective fame and fortune through his actions and
faulty promises.
In my opinion, I can’t say he is a hero or villain, despite all his discoveries, we can’t forget the tragedy
and brutality that he and his men inflicted on indigenous people. We cannot forget his contribution to
the world, his farming technique, his knowledge, and his technologies. Columbus was a talented sailor,
navigator, and ship captain. He bravely went west without a map, trusting his instincts and calculations.
Although he wasn’t the best man to ever walk this earth, we cannot see him as just a villain. His
discoveries change the world, the entire course of history, yet at the same time we can’t call him a hero
and he should never regard as one. His treatment of humans was undeniably atrocious and should never
be forgotten.
