Who is William Shakespeare? When people hear the words, “The Globe Theater”, they
probably think of William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare will always be an important part
of literature. It is important to explore the different aspects of Shakespeare life. Such as his
childhood, education, and his accomplishments. The history behind William’s childhood will
never be fully known. William is one of the world’s greatest writers in the English language

William was the son of John Shakespeare, an alderman and Mary Arden, a local landed
heiress. William was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptized there on April 26, 1564. His
actual birthday remains unknown but traces led to believe he was born in April 23, 1564.
William was the third child of eight; he had two older sisters, Joan and Judith, and three
younger brothers, Gilbert, Richard and Edmund. William is the eldest surviving son. Before
William’s birth, his father became a successful merchant and held official positions as
alderman and bailiff, but his fortunes declined in the late 1570s. There are no records found,
but most biographers agree that William was educated at the King’s New School in Stratford,
a charter school in established in 1553. At age 18, he married the 26-year old, Anne
Hathaway. Six months later, their first child, Susanna was born on May 26, 1583. Two years
later, their twins were born on February 2, 1585, they named them Hamnet and Judith.
Hamnet died at age 11 of unknown causes, and buried on August 11, 1596. Scholars think of
the years between 1585 and 1592 as Shakespeare’s “lost years”.

In 1592, William became a part of London theatre scene. He became famous for his well-
known playwrights and poetry. He was often called, England’s “Bard of Avon”. William was
reaching above his rank, trying to match better known and well educated playwrights like
Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Nashe and Robert Greene. By the early 1590s, William was a
managing partner in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an acting company in London. In 1603,
after the crowning of King James I, the company changed its name to the King’s Men. The
King’s Men Company was very popular, William had begun to publish work and much
popular literature was sold. The theater culture in 16th century England was not admired by
