Why the Drug Trafficking Business is very Violent in Mexico?
For many years Mexico has been the main route and hub for smuggling illicit drugs that
feed the demand of the US market. Therefore, it is a turmoil that places providers and
traffickers in a position where they are forced to battle among each other for power and
control over this profitable illicit type of businesses. Individuals involved in this business
do not like to have competitors although it is a very competitive environment. As a result
of these battles for power and control, it has placed the socio-economic and political
structure of Mexico in a situation that jeopardizes their legal structure as a whole. In turn,
this has caused violent altercations that affect the citizens of Mexico and the United States,
as well as other countries directly and indirectly.
The drug related violence in the Borders between Mexico and The United States has
escalated in the last few years. The Calderon Government launched and declared war
against drug cartels operating in Mexico. In an attempt to reduce violence and crack down
the heads of the cartels, the government sent the Mexican Military to assist in this
operation in order to suppress the violence. Despite the deployments, violence associated
with these organized crimes has skyrocketed. For instance, the drug-related deaths in 2007,
Calderon’s first full year in office, topped 2,500. The total in 2009 however, was at least
6,700 with some estimates over 8,000. Not all the victims have been associated with the
cartels, but most of the violence has been the result of competition and rivalries among the
cartels. (Olson & Wilson, 2010).
The Main focus of Calderon’s operation was to capture the head of the cartels, but even the
Military has found it very difficult to control the violence and to reduce insecurity. Similar
actions took place in the US in 1971 when President Richard Nixon declared war on drugs.
Most of the violence in the United States occurs in the Border States of the Mexican side.
Its where most of the drug operations take place and most of the cartels are settled. An
important factor that favorably contributed to the violence in the Border States is the
corruption involved among political leaders, government figures, and cartel members.
Corruption is one of the main fuels that ignites violence and facilitates the operation of
