Socialism is “a movement toward cooperation and a sense of community” . This
movement had two main goals: a state regulation of property and a greater economic
equality. One of the greatest influences of Socialism was Karl Marx who established a firm
foundation for modern socialism. Marx, joined by Friedrich Engels published “The
Communist Manifesto,” which the majority of socialists in Europe used as a guide. The
Socialist Movement emerged with other movements like Nationalism and Liberalism.
Responding to the fragmentation of society and the outcome of Individualism, it was a
movement that encouraged uniqueness, self-consciousness, and others.
Socialism was very important in this period of European history (1815-1914), it
encourages the proletariat, modern working class, to unite and fight for a specific goal.
This goal was to improve their way of livings and their rights. As we can see, Socialism
made a lot of changes in Europe, specifically affecting women.
Socialism was important for women because it include their liberation. It stated that all
people, men and women, are equal. It gave women a chance to be listened to, accepted in
society, and a reason to fight united with men. They were fighting shoulder to shoulder for
a better place, almost as equals.
We now know that socialism was the answer for many women during this period. The
book “A History of World Society” talks about Adelheid Popp , self-taught workingwomen
who lived from 1869-1939. As in many cases she first was a sympathizer of the
