Making Music, Making Meaning Essay
Audience: Young people who are dealing with negativity
Who Says
Everyone has insecurities. People look at a reflection of them and can only point out their
flaws. But what happens when these insecurities makes a person so weak that they let their
flaws take over them and they start to bring other people down? By using mean comments
to throw at innocent people, these bullies feel better about themselves. Selena Gomez’s
“Who Says” is a song about inspiring people who have been a victim of bullying to see
their true beauty. Selena uses this song to remind people of their worth. She reminds all the
victims that those bullies have insecurities of their own and everyone is beautiful. She uses
this song to empower all the people who have been bullied to see that they are perfect and
that those people, who are bullying them, have their own flaws as well.
This world is a very confusing place. People who have been brought down by their own
insecurities feel the need to bring other people down to make them feel better about their
insecurities. I will never understand why so many people find joy in putting other people
down. What is even more unfortunate is that there are so many ways to bully one another.
From the old fashion in person bullying to cyber bullying, bullying just never stops. Selena
Gomez, being a very successful actress, has seen her own share of bullying. So in her song
she states that no one can tell you that you aren’t pretty. That you are a work of your own
