I think that an author has the right to open any book as they please because it is their work of art.
Furthermore, Colson Whitehead choice to open the novel with AJarry was beautiful. Personally,
I believe that Whitehead opening with that story really brought out sympathy form the readers.
Opening the story with such a powerful description allowed the reader to really understand to a
certain extent what slaves went through. I personally do not believe that there was a better way
that he could have opened this book. I hear the word plantation so much when speaking of
slavery but getting such a great description allowed me to visualize the plantation more as well
as the hardship that the slaves had to go through. Opening with a personal story that allowed the
Character to express their emotions and feelings at the time was amazing. I am a black woman; I
would have thoughts that I would not have made it through slavery or this time because I would
