A 1) The major auto manufactures do not build ambulances because their business
processes are designed for larger volumes of production. Mass production using assembly
lines is their forte. The volumes for ambulances are relatively small for any major
manufacturer to consider.
A 2) One alternative is to build the ambulance like building a ship or constructing a house
where the materials and components move to a stationary chassis till it is finished as an
ambulance
A 3) The customization of the ambulance has an impact on the specifications of the
aluminum panels, upholstery, wiring harness, interior cabinets and windows. Therefore
work cells which can be equipped with necessary general purpose machinery and skilled
people to deliver customized modules feeding the assembly line. Upholstery making can
not be part of the process of the assembly line since there would be constant interruption
in the assembly line in terms of changes in design shape and configuration of the
upholstery.
A 4) First station is starting out the day mounting aluminum chassis , in the next station
custom painting is done, on the assembly line the following day electrical wiring harness
is fitted. The next day the next station is where wooden cabinetry is installed. The
following day the next station is where window fulfillment and lighting are installed. The
