What is a TEXTUAL ANALYSIS?
A formal paper in which you make an argument and support your argument with examples from
the primary text while also incorporating other scholarly sources. After this assignment, you will
be able to read a text rhetorically, make an informed critical analysis of a chosen text, and be
able to logically support that analysis with evidence from the text as well as secondary sources.
A Textual Essay does more than simply summarize another author’s piece of writing. Therefore,
your Essay will instead analyze the various parts of a text and will demonstrate how these parts
work together to form the finished text.
Rather than describing or summarizing WHAT the author has written, you will instead discuss
HOW the author writes.
A Textual analysis is NOT… 1.) A paper exploring the relevance of the text to your own life.
2.) A summary of the text. Your teacher is not interested in your ability to restate what you have
read.
For this assignment, you have two options:
1. Pick a song from your favorite musician and analyze the lyrics. Briefly explain WHAT the
musician is trying to say. THEN, Explain HOW they say it. Use examples from the text and
show HOW each example contributes to the overall purpose of the text as a whole.
2. Locate a poem by a Spoken Word Poet. Briefly explain WHAT the Poet is trying to say.
