What are some common errors that managers make during interviews?
How can managers conduct an effective interview?
Managers today can make many mistakes while interviewing applicants. In my experience
talking too much is my biggest mistake. Managers don’t need to deliver a long dialog or
talk about the company unless the applicant asks questions concerning the company or job.
The best thing you can do is listen thought out the interview. I also like to let the applicant
break awkward silence, for sales people you can get a feel for how they have been trained.
Those silences also give you a chance to see how applicants handle pressure situations.
Another mistake is not having your list of preset interview questions ready or not using
them. Sometimes you will be taken off track but it is very important to keep your interview
on track so you don’t miss any steps. I like to take time to review my questions, and think
about what I want from the new employee.
The text states that you should avoid asking questions off the cuff. This can lead to
inappropriate questions that could be uninformative, and at worst it can be legally
dangerous. I like to have our HR department approve my list of questions question ahead
of time and stick to them. This eliminates any action from the applicant if you do not hire
