Week twelve Assignment
Number one. Jacques-Louis David’s painting of Napoleon at St. Bernard Pass, 1801;
portrays Neoclassical style while Eugène Delacroix’s, Hamlet and Horatio in the Graveyard,
shows Romanticism style. There are many differences between Neoclassical style and
Romanticism style, to name a few, there are period difference, logic and reasoning with
emotions, nature and society, realism vs idealism.
An aspect of the difference is the philosophical take and history on each style, while
neoclassicism was given prominence by writes who saw thought and reason as important,
Romanticism on the other hand was brought up by writes who perforce importance on emotions
and self-experience. Neoclassicism was from the 18th century to early 19th century, Romanticism
flourished at the end of 18th century. It is important to note that while Neoclassic focus on
society, Romanticism was a broader take on nature, subjects on Neoclassic paintings were
idealized with smooth, perfect skin, and strong muscular builds, while Romanticism artist
focused more on the realism of the subjects.
There are a few similarities, for example both art styles were both born from the idea of
Enlightenment, while Neoclassicism reflects the enlightenment aspect of rationality, thought the
use of perfect and geometrical patterns and form, Romanticism focused on the emotion, passion
and beauty, both share many of the similar settings, genre and forms.
