Instructions. This activity involves responding, in writing, with examples of the core listening skills to
client statements. For each client statement, please provide a summarization, a reflection of content, a
reflection of feeling, and a checkout question that a counselor might use to respond to the client. Please
note that the first three of these core microskills are statements and not questions, and need to be
stated. Please first study this example:
EXAMPLE:
“You know my father used to come in drunk, and my mother never said a word. I can’t believe
some of the stuff she put up with. And for what?”
Summarization: (Summary of a large amount of information)
What you have told me so far today is that in your youth, your father used to come home drunk and that
your mother never said a word back to him about it. You find it hard to believe the things she endured in
silence, and you sense that there was no reward for this.
Reflection of Content: (Brief reflection of the high points of the content of the story that the counselor
hears)
