Introduction
Listening is one of the most used communication skills that we learn at an early age.
Being able to effectively active listen does come with challenges, but the most important part is
knowing how to listen; both personally and professionally. Many believe that they are active
listeners, although most do not realize how little they are actually retaining during a
conversation. “Research shows that roughly 48 hours after a conversation, listeners are only able
to remember about 25 percent of what they heard.” (Steil, Barker, & Watson, 1983). Our
environment, cultures, and even fear can all influence how well we are actively listening.
Since most of our time is spent listening to others, it is important to use each step of the
active listening process to improve our abilities and retain essential information while
communicating. The key steps in the process are attending, understanding, remembering,
