Definitions + measurement
–up until 40 years ago, the family was always defined by blood/ and or legal ties!
–How the family was understood.!
–Policies were defined historically, haven’t changed up until, as of 15-20 years ago that
your family is defined through blood and legal ties (narrow minded).!
–What does this mean? Meant that you share a common ancestor, all blood related to
eahcother, also meant that if you weren’t blood related, then you would have had a legal
contract (marriage contract/ adoption contract)!
–Up until the 1950s in the west, the person you were married to you were also blood
related, both blood and legal ties!
–The problem with this definition however, is narrow, and how people actually live family.
Lots of ppl have family that they have blood tie to but haven’t spoken to them in years,
for reasons of family violence, being lgbtq, etc. !
–A lot of people that they are blood tied to they have nothing to do with they.!
–Most ppl live their family, even if they have blood or legal ties, they may not even count
on them, they may cut off their family, and create a new family- and those r the people
that are their emergency contact, like me and Jasmin!
–Defining the family in this narrow way, it ignores who is doing violence !
–For example, people who come from blended families, children from the previous
parents, and no blood legal ties to step parents, but still recognize their steps at family. !
–Much better understanding on family; recognizing that people whop you recognize as
family is also your family, m and don’t need blood or legal ties!
–Family violence!
–Very few cases that get reported in family violence !
–The law is written through the male gaze!
