In Muslim tradition Islam began in 610 in a cave in Mecca, where an angel came across
the prophet Muhammad and revealed to him the words of the Quran. For Muslims since God
sent them the Quran in writing, writing then began the central feature of the Islamic culture. The
earliest dated words of the Quran are found in a stone building in Jerusalem, called “The Dome
of the Rock.” The Quran was not only a spiritual focus but an artistic focus as well, because
Muslims tried to make manuscripts as beautiful as possible.
