civil rights movement. Although their desires for freedom were the same, their ideas of how to
attain it were drastically different. Du Bois believed that the educated African Americans had a
duty to fight inequality and that education was the source of freedom. Garvey believed that
African American freedom would come from independence and self-reliance. At the cusp of The
Great Migration, African Americans all had different ideas of what freedom was and what it
should entail. Many believed that moving to the North would provide more opportunities and
more freedom. To their dismay, they were met with very few job opportunities and the same
amount of discrimination that they faced in the South. Tired of facing injustice and violence,
many African Americans decided that they needed a leader to push for change.!
