The Water Project
The Water Project, Inc is a non-for-profit corporation, incorporated on December 5,
2007. It is an independent organization based in Concord, New Hampshire that
operates in Sub-Saharan Africa to develop lasting water, sanitation and health
programs for communities who suffer needlessly from the lack of access to clean water
and sanitation. As of now, the organization creates local leadership and partners with
local organizations within the countries of operation. Their business model includes
providing day to day training, program audit, providing strategic direction in how to use
tools and equipment, and organizing financial and human resources. These water
programs are focused on implementation of new water and sanitation projects, as well
as maintaining and monitoring repairs of the existing water projects.
Millions of people in rural communities across the world especially in sub-Saharan
Africa suffer from lack of clean and safe water. Women and girls are the most affected
group amongst the population as they have to walk miles for times to gather water from
the streams and ponds which are full of water-borne disease resulting in making their
friends and family sick and causing deaths. When a community doesn’t have access to
clean drinking water and proper sanitation condition they are deflected of so many
opportunities. Access to clean water improves Education, Hunger, Poverty and most
importantly health. Students return to their classes when they are not walking miles and
miles to gather water, especially teenage girls stay in school through their teenage
years when they have access to proper and safe latrines in there home and in school.
When the community has access to clean drinking water it results in food security.
Farmers are in a condition where they can work on their farms and water their crops at
the same time.
The Water Project currently sponsors 1000 projects in Kenya, Uganda and Sierra
Leone. The mission statement of this organization is to provide clean drinking water and
proper sanitation conditions to as many people in Africa as possible. They constantly
keep a watch on the wells and tube wells through their local teams in order to keep the
water supply clean and available for the community.
According to the annual report of The Water Project, the donations they received in
2015 were fairly low, with a mission statement that helps so many communities and
their futures they deserve more limelight and corporate sponsorships than they already
have. As of today, this organization only has 1000 projects in Africa, considering the
