WASTE DISPOSAL
Most materials do not break down easily in modern landfills. Every day, we continue
to use a lot of materials like paper and plastic faster than they can be recycled.
However, by using source reduction techniques, we can conserve resource in places
where recycling cannot do the job. Is it not better to produce less waste than to decide
how to get rid of the waste later? So, based on this statement our topic is about waste
disposal on industrial.
First of all, what is waste? When asked, most of you will say it is ‘useless stuff to be
thrown away’. we throw waste away but where is ‘away’? ‘away’ for most of us
means into the garbage bins and got picked up by a garbage truck and delivered to the
nearest landfill or incinerator. So, this is household waste, which is accounts for about
half of solid waste produced in this country. Every Malaysian creates nearly one
kilogram or waste a day.
However, today focus on industrial waste. As our nation develops, we have more
industries. Therefore, we have more waste from factories, shops, offices and hospitals.
Typical offices waste will be paper products and used office equipment. Industrial
waste may be more harmful. It may contain metals like mercury, cadmium and lead.
These make up a small amount of solid waste but they can make people sick and
pollute the environment. Asbestos fibers, coal dust and other industrial chemicals,
when inhaled over a long period can cause cancer and other serious lung and intestinal
problems. Too much lead can cause mental retardation and other serious nervous
system illnesses.
