Walk Out of the Shelter
In today’s society, more and more young people came back home and stayed with their
parents after graduation. This phenomena now has become a common and popular trend. How
did that happen? Anya Kamenetz states her idea in the article “Generation debt” : due to the fast
growth of college tuition, less and less families could afford the college fees. As a result, young
people have to borrow many money to enter college. After graduating from college, they found it
is hard for them to pay those debt, thus they choose to live with their parents, which can help
with their burden. However, the public tends to question this behavior, should young people
come back home after graduating or live by themselves in order to be independent? Should
young people live on their own in order to be more responsible? Nonetheless, there is no broad
agreement on what it means to be a “responsible adult”, which leads to an extreme consequence
in society. People could not have an agreement on the definition in “responsible adult”, thus the
dispute and argument always exist on society. The new generation has their own definition and
attitude towards “independent adult”. Young people consider that coming back home and living
with parents can help them become more independent and responsible. According Ryan Healy,
who wrote “Twentysomething: Be Responsible, Go Back Home After College” explain that
young people should go back home since they will not worry about the debt and house rent, thus
they can pay more attention to their perfect jobs, saving money and preparing to enter the adult
world. Notwithstanding, most ordinary people in society hold disagreement with Healy, one of a
traditional mother, Florinda Vasquez describes that graduates should be independent and living
