Waitress
An American independent cooking themed movie, Waitress, was written and directed by
Adrienne Shelly in 2007. It is a comedy, drama and romance (genre) film which tells the story of
a woman who worked as a waitress in Joe’s Pie Diner. Her name is Jenna Hunterson. She was
always frightened of her husband. She always felt trapped of her controlling and abusive
husband. Without Jenna Hunterson’s acknowledgement, she was made pregnant by her husband
when she was drunk. It was an unwanted pregnancy which Jenna later discovers she was
pregnant with her repulsive husband’s child. She planned to win a pie making contest in a nearby
town to make enough money to get away from him. We can say that this movie falls into different
genres because it’s a comedy drama about small town waitress who had an affair with a doctor in a
hospital and drama at work and with her husband at home. Jenna’s husband was so repugnant while
also tragic, scary while also affectionate. The setting of the movie was done in small pie diner place
and a doctor’s clinic. This movie has a natural normal living life of a people kind of settings. The
Storyline of the showed the supporting characters of the Dr. Pomatter and Jenna’s diner owner Joe
who brought big and enormous amount of humor and heart to the poor Jenna. The strong nature of
Jenna did show her character with the closed in feeling she had about her marriage but at the same
time it left wondered why she didn’t leave him already? This is the implicit meaning of this movie.
This movie is perfectly crafted with plenty of comedy, emotion and depth. (291 words)
Narrative
The main protagonist of this movie is the waitress, Jenna Hunterson and the main antagonist is her
cruel husband, Earl. The initial starting of the movie “Waitress” started by making a
pie. Jenna Hunterson loved to make pie with her own recipe and ingredients. She was happy because she
was making pies. But she was not satisfied and happy with her husband who’s very cruel and mean
person. In the movie, he was blowing his car horn simultaneously three to four times in a row, which
is definitely an awkward situation for Jenna in front of her friends and work place and it described about
her husband, Earl’s behavior. Her husband is an Antagonist. He collected all of her money that was given
at her work place. Her husband was very attention seeker. He expected more from his wife more than she
could ever give. Meanwhile her friends approached her to check for her unwanted pregnancy, which
showed the result of the test to be positive. Being the pregnant was the turning point of an Act I. She was
so creative and fond of making pies, that deep down back in her head, she all of a sudden created a bad
baby pie. Jenna was so worried about her pregnancy. She went to the doctor’s office and finally it was
confirmed that she was pregnant. All of a sudden, she kissed the doctor which is the first turning point of
this movie. The doctor used to call her for next appointment and kiss her. They kept meeting together.
The doctor came to her house, bought her a gift i.e, a bowl to make a pie. Whenever Jenna used to pay a
visit to the doctor’s office, she always carried a pie in her hand which definitely shows that she was also
interested and loving what she was doing. At Jenna’s workplace, she discovered Cal and her co-worker
